What We Do

Gift Aid Claimed Correctly for Donors and Charities

Gift Aid allows charities to reclaim basic rate tax on donations made by UK taxpayers. For every pound donated, the charity can claim an extra 25 pence from HMRC. If you are a higher or additional rate taxpayer, you can also claim the difference between your rate and the basic rate on your self assessment return.

Our ICAEW and ACCA qualified accountants support both sides of Gift Aid. For donors, we calculate and claim higher rate relief on your return. For charities, we manage Gift Aid declarations, prepare reclaim schedules, submit claims through Charities Online, and handle the Gift Aid Small Donations Scheme.

Why It Matters

More Money for Charities, Less Tax for Donors

Gift Aid is one of the most valuable tax reliefs in the UK, yet many donors miss the higher rate relief on their self assessment return and many charities fail to reclaim all the Gift Aid they are entitled to. ABM Chartered Accountants ensures both sides get the full benefit without leaving money on the table.

For charities, unclaimed Gift Aid is uncollected income. If your declaration records are incomplete, your claims are late, or your small donations are not included, you are missing funds that belong to your charity. We put the systems in place to make sure every eligible pound is reclaimed.

What is Gift Aid?

Gift Aid is a UK tax relief that allows charities to reclaim the basic rate income tax you have already paid on your donation. For every one pound you give, the charity can claim an extra 25 pence from HMRC, making your donation worth more at no extra cost to you.

If you pay tax at 40 or 45 percent, you can claim the difference between the higher rate and the basic rate on your self assessment return. For a 100 pound donation, a 40 percent taxpayer can claim back 25 pounds. ABM Chartered Accountants includes this on your return.

Charities reclaim Gift Aid by submitting a claim to HMRC through the Charities Online service. The claim must include details of each donor, the donation amount, and the date. A valid Gift Aid declaration must be held for every donor included in the claim.

The Gift Aid Small Donations Scheme allows charities to claim a Gift Aid style top-up on small cash and contactless donations of 30 pounds or less, without needing a declaration from each donor. The maximum claim is 8,000 pounds of donations per tax year per charity.

If a donor signs a Gift Aid declaration but has not paid enough income tax or capital gains tax to cover the amount the charity reclaims, HMRC can ask the donor to repay the shortfall. ABM Chartered Accountants checks your tax position to prevent this.

Fees depend on whether you are a donor needing relief on your return or a charity needing ongoing Gift Aid management. We offer fixed-fee pricing for both. Contact ABM Chartered Accountants for a quote based on your requirements.
