MTD Registration and Compliance Support in London and the UK
Signing up for Making Tax Digital involves Government Gateway checks, business details and software authorisation, and errors delay your first submission. ABM Chartered Accountants handles MTD registration and compliance support end to end, from HMRC sign-up to every deadline after.
HMRC Sign-Up Done Right, First Time
MTD registration and compliance support starts with signing you up through HMRC’s online service, using your existing Self Assessment or VAT credentials. HMRC asks for your business start date, trading name, address and nature of trade, and each income source must be checked and added. From September 2026, HMRC will automatically enrol anyone who has not signed up, so acting now keeps you in control.
As your authorised agent, we complete the sign-up, link your compatible software to HMRC and then manage quarterly updates, VAT returns and final declarations on your behalf.

MTD Registration FAQs
Answers to the questions we hear most about signing up for Making Tax Digital and staying compliant afterwards.
What do I need to register for MTD?
Your Government Gateway user ID for Self Assessment, your business start date, trading name, address and nature of trade, plus details of each self-employment and property income source. We gather and submit all of it.
Can my accountant register me for MTD?
Yes. An authorised agent can sign you up through their agent services account. If ABM already acts for you on Self Assessment, no additional authorisation is required for MTD for Income Tax.
What happens if I do not sign up?
From September 2026 HMRC will automatically enrol anyone required to use MTD for Income Tax who has not registered. You would then need to catch up on any quarterly updates already missed.
Do I still file a Self Assessment return?
Yes, for the year before you join MTD. If you started in April 2026, your 2025 to 2026 Self Assessment return is still due by 31 January 2027 through the existing route.
How do I register for MTD for VAT?
Sign-up is completed through your VAT online account, after which MTD must be activated in your compatible software. All VAT-registered businesses must comply unless HMRC has granted an exemption.
What does ongoing compliance support cover?
Digital record maintenance, quarterly update preparation and submission, VAT return filing, final declaration, HMRC correspondence and a shared deadline calendar so you always know what is due and when.
