HMRC Correspondence and Enquiry Support for MTD Taxpayers
An HMRC letter, penalty notice or compliance check is stressful and time-sensitive. ABM Chartered Accountants provides HMRC correspondence and enquiry support as your authorised agent, reading every notice, responding within the deadline and representing you until the matter is closed.
Every HMRC Letter Handled by Your Agent
HMRC correspondence and enquiry support covers everything HMRC sends about your Making Tax Digital obligations: penalty point notices, queries on quarterly updates, requests for records, compliance checks on digital links and software, and enquiries into your final declaration. We assess each letter, explain what it means and what is at stake, gather the evidence, and respond on your behalf through HMRC’s agent channels.
Where penalties are wrong or a reasonable excuse exists, we prepare and submit the appeal, request an HMRC review and escalate to the tax tribunal if needed.

HMRC Enquiry Support FAQs
Answers to common questions about dealing with HMRC letters, penalties and compliance checks relating to Making Tax Digital.
What should I do with an HMRC letter?
Send it to us the same day. We identify the type of notice, the response deadline and the risk, then tell you what evidence we need. Do not reply yourself until we have reviewed it.
Can MTD penalty points be appealed?
Yes. HMRC’s decision letter explains how to request a review. A successful appeal usually requires a reasonable excuse such as serious illness or a technical failure outside your control.
Do inaccuracy penalties apply to quarterly updates?
No. Inaccuracy penalties do not apply to quarterly updates, only to the annual tax return under MTD, in the same way they applied to Self Assessment returns. Estimates in updates are permitted.
What happens in an MTD compliance check?
HMRC asks for evidence of compatible software, digital records and digital links, and may review specific transactions. We compile the evidence, attend any meeting and manage all correspondence.
What if I cannot pay the tax demanded?
We can arrange a time to pay agreement with HMRC. In your first MTD year you have 30 days from the due date to pay or agree a plan before late payment penalties apply.
How long does an HMRC enquiry take?
Simple queries close within weeks once the right information is supplied. Full compliance checks can take several months. We keep the scope narrow and push for closure at every stage.
