MTD Readiness Assessment and Implementation for UK Businesses
Unsure whether Making Tax Digital applies to you, or where to start? ABM Chartered Accountants provides a structured MTD readiness assessment and implementation service that confirms your obligations, finds record-keeping gaps and delivers a working setup before your first deadline.
Know Exactly Where You Stand With MTD
An MTD readiness assessment and implementation review starts with your qualifying income, which is your gross self-employment and property income before expenses. HMRC used 2024 to 2025 Self Assessment returns to decide who joined MTD for Income Tax in April 2026, but its letters are not always accurate, so we verify your position independently and confirm your start date.
We then audit how you currently keep records, test your existing software against HMRC requirements and produce a written implementation roadmap covering software, processes and deadlines.

Right software first time: Assessing your income types and transaction volume avoids paying for a platform that cannot handle property or foreign income.
Exemptions identified: If you are digitally excluded or below the threshold, we confirm it and document the position.
Clear costed roadmap: You receive a written implementation plan with owners, dates and a fixed fee for each stage.
Smoother first quarter: Businesses that assess early submit their first quarterly update without last-minute data problems.

MTD Readiness Assessment FAQs
Common questions from sole traders, landlords and business owners about assessing and implementing Making Tax Digital requirements.
What does an MTD readiness assessment include?
We confirm whether MTD for VAT or Income Tax applies, verify your qualifying income and start date, review your current records and software, and deliver a written implementation roadmap with clear next steps.
How is qualifying income calculated for MTD?
Qualifying income is gross self-employment turnover plus gross property income before any expenses. Employment income, dividends, pensions and interest are excluded. Jointly owned property counts only your share of the income.
Is my HMRC letter definitely correct?
Not always. HMRC based letters on 2024 to 2025 returns, and basis period reform inflated some figures. We check your actual income and can challenge an incorrect notice on your behalf.
Can I be exempt from Making Tax Digital?
Yes. HMRC grants exemptions where digital tools are not practical due to age, disability, location or religious grounds. We assess whether you qualify and prepare the exemption application if so.
How long does implementation take after assessment?
Most sole traders and landlords are fully set up within two to four weeks, covering software configuration, bank feeds, opening balances and HMRC sign-up. Complex multi-entity setups may take longer.
Should I join MTD voluntarily before my deadline?
Often yes. Voluntary sign-up lets you test quarterly updates while no penalty points apply, and it smooths the transition when your threshold year arrives. We advise case by case.
