About Quarterly Updates

Every Update Prepared, Checked and Filed

Quarterly update preparation and submission follows a fixed rhythm. Standard quarters end on 5 July, 5 October, 5 January and 5 April, with updates due by 7 August, 7 November, 7 February and 7 May. Each update is cumulative, reporting figures from 6 April to the quarter end, so corrections go in the next submission. Each sole trade and property business needs its own update.

Before each deadline we review your digital records, query anything unclear, prepare the update in your compatible software and submit it once you have approved the figures.

Why Let ABM File Your Quarterly Updates

Never miss the 7th: Every deadline is diarised with reminders to you well before we need your records.

Figures reviewed by an accountant: Miscoded transactions and missing income are caught before HMRC sees them, not after.

Multiple businesses handled: Separate updates for your trade and property business are prepared together from one set of records.

VAT periods aligned: Where useful we elect calendar quarters so Income Tax updates and VAT returns share the same cycle.

Running tax estimate: After each update you receive an estimated liability for the year so far.

Quarterly Update FAQs

Common questions about preparing and submitting quarterly updates under Making Tax Digital for Income Tax.

What is included in a quarterly update?

A summary of income and expenses by category for the tax year to date, drawn from your digital records. No accounting adjustments, reliefs or other income are needed until the final declaration.

By 7 August, 7 November, 7 February and 7 May, covering standard quarters ending 5 July, 5 October, 5 January and 5 April. Calendar quarters can be elected but deadlines stay the same.

Each update reports figures from 6 April to the end of the latest quarter and replaces the previous submission. Errors in an earlier quarter are corrected automatically in the next update.

No. Quarterly updates carry no payment. Your tax remains due by 31 January, with payments on account on 31 January and 31 July as before. Updates simply give an estimate.

A nil update is still required. Missing it earns a penalty point once the 2026 to 2027 soft-landing year ends, so we submit nil updates on your behalf automatically.

Yes. HMRC accepts provisional figures in quarterly updates provided they are corrected by the final declaration. We aim for accurate figures each quarter so year-end adjustments stay small.
