Is education VAT exempt in the UK?
Education supplied by eligible bodies such as schools, universities and charities that reinvest profits is VAT-exempt. Private tuition by sole trader tutors teaching school or university subjects is also exempt.
How does partial exemption affect providers?
Providers making both exempt and taxable supplies must apportion VAT on shared costs. Only VAT on taxable activities can be reclaimed. Getting this calculation wrong risks HMRC penalties.
How is course fee income recognised?
Fees received in advance for multi-term courses are deferred revenue. Income is recognised over the delivery period as teaching takes place, matching revenue to the period service is provided.
What changed for private school fees?
From January 2025, private school fees became standard-rated at 20%. Schools must register for VAT, charge on fees and manage input tax recovery. Nurseries and training providers are unaffected.
How is government funding accounted for?
