MTD for Income Tax Support for Sole Traders and Landlords
Making Tax Digital for Income Tax replaces the annual Self Assessment return with four quarterly updates and a final declaration. ABM Chartered Accountants provides complete MTD for Income Tax support, covering sign-up, records, every quarterly submission and year-end filing.
A Managed Service for Every MTD Year
MTD for Income Tax support from ABM covers the full annual cycle. We confirm your qualifying income and start date, sign you up through our agent services account, set up compatible software and maintain your digital records. Each quarter we prepare and submit a cumulative update, then after year end apply adjustments before filing your final declaration by 31 January.
Sole traders and landlords with qualifying income above £50,000 joined in April 2026, with the £30,000 and £20,000 thresholds following in April 2027 and April 2028.

Why Outsource MTD for Income Tax
Five deadlines, none missed: Four quarterly updates and the final declaration are diarised, prepared and submitted by your ABM accountant.
Corrections without stress: Updates are cumulative, so anything missed in one quarter is put right in the next with no penalty.
Tax bill visible early: Quarterly figures give an estimated liability months ahead, leaving time to plan payments on account.
Reliefs still claimed: Capital allowances, losses and other reliefs are applied at year end, exactly as under Self Assessment.
VAT handled alongside: If you are VAT registered, the same records and team cover both MTD regimes.

MTD for Income Tax FAQs
Answers to the questions sole traders and landlords ask most about Making Tax Digital for Income Tax Self Assessment.
When must I use MTD for Income Tax?
From April 2026 if your qualifying income exceeded £50,000 in 2024 to 2025, from April 2027 above £30,000, and from April 2028 above £20,000. HMRC checks your latest Self Assessment return.
What replaces the Self Assessment tax return?
Four cumulative quarterly updates during the year, followed by a final declaration submitted through compatible software by 31 January. The final declaration is where adjustments, reliefs and other income are added.
What if my income drops below the threshold?
Once mandated you remain in MTD for Income Tax. You can only opt out after your qualifying income has been below the threshold for three consecutive tax years.
Are partnerships included in MTD for Income Tax?
Not yet. General partnerships are outside the current rules and continue with Self Assessment. Individual partners only join MTD if they have other qualifying sole trade or property income.
Do quarterly updates mean paying tax quarterly?
No. Quarterly updates are summaries of income and expenses only. Tax remains payable by 31 January, with payments on account on the usual dates, exactly as under Self Assessment.
What do I send you each quarter?
Very little if bank feeds and receipt capture are set up. We review your records, query anything unclear and submit the update. You approve it before it goes to HMRC.
