Accounting Built for Music Teaching Professionals
Music teachers face challenges that general accountants rarely handle. VAT exemption on private tuition, peripatetic travel, mixed PAYE and self-employed income, instrument allowances and exam administration costs all demand advisors who know how music teaching professionals earn and get taxed.
ABM Chartered Accountants works with piano teachers, guitar tutors, vocal coaches and peripatetic music teachers across England, delivering structured financial support for music teaching businesses and individual teachers. Every Self Assessment, expense claim and tax return is handled accurately.
Helping Music Teachers Track Income and Claim Correctly
Music teachers need more than basic compliance. ABM Chartered Accountants prepares tuition income schedules, mileage records, instrument expense claims, teaching material deductions and tax planning, giving teachers clear visibility over net income per teaching hour after expenses and tax.
Whether you teach privately from home, travel between schools and students, combine teaching with performing or run a limited company, our ICAEW and ACCA qualified team adapts to your setup, keeping the business and individual teachers covered on tax.

Frequently Asked Questions
Here are answers to common questions peripatetic teachers, private instructors and music teaching professionals ask about specialist accounting.
Is private music tuition VAT-exempt?
Yes, if you are self-employed and teach a subject ordinarily taught in schools. Music qualifies. However, tuition delivered through a limited company loses the exemption and becomes standard-rated at 20%.
Can I claim instrument costs?
Yes. Instruments used for teaching qualify for capital allowances through the Annual Investment Allowance. Maintenance costs like strings, reeds, bow rehairing and piano tuning are deductible revenue expenses.
How is peripatetic travel claimed?
Mileage to students’ homes and schools is deductible at HMRC approved rates. Keep a log with date, destination and purpose per journey. Regular routes to one workplace may lose deductibility.
How is mixed PAYE and self-employed reported?
School employment under PAYE and private teaching income are declared on one Self Assessment. PAYE goes in the employment section. Private tuition income and expenses go in the self-employment section.
What other teaching expenses are deductible?
Sheet music, method books, exam entry administration, DBS checks, ISM membership, teaching studio costs, notation software and accompanist fees are all allowable. Each must be wholly and exclusively for teaching.
Can ABM support music teachers nationwide?
Yes. ABM Chartered Accountants serves music teachers across England using secure cloud-based platforms, delivering specialist accounting to peripatetic, home-based and studio teaching professionals.
