Frequently Asked Questions

Here are answers to common questions brewery owners, distillery founders and spirits producers ask about specialist accounting for the sector.

How does alcohol excise duty work?

Duty is charged on the volume and ABV of finished products. Monthly returns go to HMRC with payment by direct debit. Duty is deferred while products remain on registered premises.

SPR gives qualifying producers with annual pure alcohol production under 4,500 hectolitres a discounted duty rate. The discount is calculated before each production year and applied when products are released.

Raw materials, labour, utilities and overhead are allocated per batch. Accurate batch costing reveals true margins across different products and informs pricing for wholesale, taproom and direct retail channels.

Spirits maturing in casks are held as stock on the balance sheet, often for years before sale. Valuation includes production costs and may need impairment review if market conditions change.

Taproom sales to consumers include VAT at 20% on all drinks. Wholesale to trade also carries VAT at different terms. Correct separation of retail and wholesale revenue is important.
