Frequently Asked Questions

Here are answers to common questions car dealers, garage owners, bodyshop operators and vehicle traders ask about specialist accounting.

How does the VAT Margin Scheme work?

VAT is charged on the profit margin, not the full sale price. Eligible second-hand vehicles bought without VAT qualify. A stock book recording every vehicle is mandatory for HMRC compliance.

A part-exchange creates two separate transactions. The dealer buys the customer’s vehicle at agreed value and sells the replacement at full price. Each enters the stock book for margin calculations.

Vehicles are valued at the lower of cost or net realisable value. Reconditioning costs are not added for margin calculations but claimed separately. Accurate stock counts directly affect taxable profit.

Service labour, MOT fees, parts sales and bodywork repairs each need recording. Workshop income is standard-rated at 20%. Separating sales from workshop revenue gives clearer insight into each profit centre.

Yes. Dealers introducing finance products need FCA authorisation. Commission income from hire purchase and PCP introductions must be recognised correctly. FCA annual fees and compliance costs are deductible business expenses.
