Frequently Asked Questions

Here are answers to common questions farmers, estate owners and agricultural tenants ask about specialist farming accounting.

How does profit averaging work for farmers?

Farmers can average profits over two or five years to smooth income. The difference must exceed 25% of the higher figure. Averaging reduces tax in volatile years but requires accruals.

The herd basis treats production livestock as fixed assets rather than trading stock. Sales and replacements within the herd are excluded from profits. This avoids taxing compulsory slaughter as income.

From April 2026, 100% APR is limited to the first £2.5 million of combined agricultural and business property. The excess receives 50% relief. Unused allowance is transferable between spouses.

BPS and SFI payments are taxable trading income. Countryside Stewardship revenue grants are also taxable. Capital grants may offset capital expenditure. HMRC cross-checks accounts against Rural Payments Agency data.

Plant, machinery, tractors, equipment and agricultural buildings qualify for the Annual Investment Allowance. Full expensing applies to companies on new qualifying assets. Structures and Buildings Allowance covers eligible farm constructions.
